Roatan, Honduras: A Solo Scuba Diver's Wet Dream

Okay, the title could use some work.

But: Honduras is where I wish I'd gotten certified. It is such a delightful little gem of a destination with a HUGE community of friendly divers. While there is diving for all levels, much of the diving is shallow and easy - gentle currents and lots to see. If you want to get certified in a group or make scuba diving friends, Roatan should be high on your list. Honduras has much to offer beyond scuba diving of course, but perhaps that is for another post.

Day 1: Arrival in Roatan

  • Arrive at Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport in Roatan, Honduras.

  • Transfer to your chosen accommodation in West End or West Bay. I stayed at Splash Inn where I purchased a dive/stay package at a discounted rate. This is probably the most affordable way to dive in the area, rather than booking accommodation & diving separately.

  • Spend the day settling in, relaxing on the beach, and familiarizing yourself with the area.

  • Explore the local restaurants and enjoy a delicious dinner. In particular, baleadas are delicious and very very affordable!

Day 2: Discover Scuba Diving

  • Begin your scuba diving adventure with a Discover Scuba Diving course.

  • Join a reputable dive center and receive a thorough briefing on scuba diving techniques and safety.

  • Practice basic skills in shallow water before embarking on a guided dive in the afternoon.

  • Explore the vibrant coral reefs and encounter an array of marine life.

  • Enjoy the evening at leisure, savoring the local cuisine and relaxing on the beach.

Day 3: Dive at Roatan Marine Park

  • Head to the Roatan Marine Park, a protected area known for its incredible dive sites.

  • Join multiple dives throughout the day, exploring sites such as Mary's Place, Blue Channel, or El Aguila wreck.

  • Encounter colorful coral formations, tropical fish, turtles, and possibly reef sharks.

  • Take a break between dives to relax on the boat and enjoy a packed lunch.

  • After the dives, unwind at your accommodation or socialize with fellow divers in the evening.

Day 4: Utila Island Adventure

  • Take a day trip to Utila, another renowned diving destination in Honduras.

  • Travel by ferry from Roatan to Utila, enjoying scenic views along the way.

  • Join dives at Utila's famous dive sites, such as the Black Hills or Halliburton wreck.

  • Explore the unique underwater topography, encounter marine creatures, and enjoy the thrill of drift diving.

  • Return to Roatan in the evening and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 5: Scuba Diving and Departure

  • Dedicate your last day to more scuba diving adventures in Roatan.

  • Visit different dive sites, depending on your preferences and recommendations from the dive center.

  • Enjoy the stunning underwater scenery, capture memorable underwater photos, and make the most of your final dives.

  • After the dives, return to your accommodation and prepare for departure the next day.

  • Reflect on your incredible scuba diving experiences in Honduras and plan future diving adventures.
