Laos: The Least Touristy Country in Southeast Asia (2024 Guide)

While the neighboring Vietnam, Thailand, and even Cambodia seem to have no shortage of visitors and tourists, Laos is still a bit of an undiscovered gem. Its serene landscapes, ancient temples, and rich cultural heritage are definitely unappreciated as compared to some of other Southeast Asian countries. From the bustling streets of Vientiane to the tranquil riverside town of Luang Prabang, and beyond, Laos offers a tapestry of experiences waiting to be explored. This guide will walk you through Laos' major tourist destinations, provide information about the convenience of the high-speed train, and provide essential information on lodging, dining, and must-see attractions. So, pack your bags, and let's uncover the hidden treasures of Laos!

Vientiane: Lao's Ugly Red-headed Stepchild

Vientiane is arguably the least scenic town we visited in January of 2024, but it is nevertheless an important town as most international flights will likely route into Vientiane. Like most capital cities, its purpose is more functional than scenic, resulting in traffic, less-than-pretty architecture, and generally a little Chaos. But, these things should not deter you- Vientiane still has a lot to offer, you just have to look a little deeper than you ordinarily would. I recommend Vientiane being your first stop because it will seem totally industrial and ugly as compared to Lao's prettier villages, but at least they had some killer food markets and cheap massages to tide us over while we waited for our train to Luang Prabang.

2. Patuxai (Victory Gate): Ascend the arch-inspired monument for panoramic views of the city, and admire its intricate design and architectural grandeur.

3. Wat Si Saket: Wander through the oldest temple in Vientiane, home to thousands of Buddha images and intricately carved walls.

Average Meal Cost: $3-$5 USD

Average Lodging Cost: $20-$50 USD per night

Luang Prabang: A UNESCO World Heritage Gem

Luang Prabang is a beautiful town full of charm. It is unrecognizable from Vientiane and is perfectly picturesque, with a bustling night time marketing featuring Laos street food like Laap, Tam, Mak Hoong (green papayal salad), Khao Niaw (sticky rice).

Points of Interest:

1. Royal Palace Museum: Step back in time and explore the former royal residence, showcasing Laotian art, culture, and history.

2. Kuang Si Waterfall: Immerse yourself in nature's beauty at this stunning waterfall, where turquoise pools cascade amidst lush greenery. This point of interest also includes a bear sanctuary and a butterfly greenhouse, so this area itself could take a full day to explore!

3. Mount Phousi: Climb to the summit for breathtaking sunset views over Luang Prabang and the Mekong River.

Average Meal Cost: $5-$10 USD. I highly recommend Tamarind Restaurant, which. is renowned for modern Laotian cuisine, offering a fine dining experience in a beautiful setting overlooking the Nam Khan River. The menu features local ingredients and flavors and had some incredible dishes such. as Mok Pa (steamed fish in banana leaves), Or Lam (Laotian stew), and Mok Nor Mai (bamboo shoot salad).

Average Lodging Cost: $30-$100 USD per night

Recommended Duration: 2-3 days
